How to Unwind and Relax on Your Day Off

On your day off it is tempting to do one of two things. You either want to spend the day in your pj’s, numbing your brain on Netflix; or, you feel like you have to use it to get a week’s worth of work done at home. While both of those options have their place, the best ways to unwind and relax on your day off are both refreshing and invigorating. On your next day off, try to spend some time doing something that will be healing to both body and soul.

Meditate

Meditation has been an integral part of people’s mindfulness practices since the beginning of time. Meditation has the power to improve your focus, slow down the aging process, boost your immune system, heighten your creativity, brighten your mood, teach you patience, feel greater self-love, manage depression and anxiety, and reduce stress.

You don’t have to be a Buddhist monk and spend hours meditating every day to benefit from it. Start small, with just 5 minutes a day. If you struggle to focus your mind on your own, simply download a meditation app to guide you through it.

Get a Massage

Few things are as restorative as getting a massage. Not only does it feel amazing, but it offers health benefits as well. Massage therapy can help improve your circulation which can lead to faster healing. Massage also boosts your immunity, reduces stress, and relieves muscle pain and tension. It may feel like a splurge, but getting a monthly massage is well worth the money.

Get Out Into Nature

Whether you like to hike, bike, garden, or watch birds, getting out into nature is soothing for your mind and body. The fresh air calms your mind, the sunshine boosts your mood, the exercise enlivens your body, and the beauty enriches your soul. Some studies even suggest that regularly spending time outdoors can lower your blood pressure and improve your cardiovascular health. It has also been shown to improve neurological functions such as concentration and thinking clearly. Whatever you like to do outside, time spent outdoors is time that is very well spent.

On your next day off, don’t just numb yourself through it or spend the entire day on your to-do list. Give yourself some time to truly unwind and relax. Choosing activities that feed your soul in addition to resting from your labors will refresh you and help you be ready to give it your all when you go back to work!
