How to Get Rid of Bad Bacteria in Your Mouth

It’s your responsibility to care for your oral hygiene and poor oral hygiene can lead to several dental issues. Having a lot of bacteria in your mouth puts you at risk for issues such as gum disease, cavities, bad breath, and more.

Finding ways to reduce bacteria in your mouth should be a priority.

Drink Water

Getting plenty of water helps your body in many ways, but it is the best drink for your teeth. When you drink soda, juice, and other beverages, it leaves sugar behind on your teeth. Bad bacteria are drawn to the sugar and this is what eventually leads to the breakdown of your teeth. Water, on the other hand, decreases bacteria.

It cleans out your mouth and flushes away leftover food and bacteria. It also helps to reduce the acidity caused by the sugars in your mouth. It balances the pH and creates an environment that isn’t conducive to bacteria. Drinking water will also freshen your breath, strengthen your teeth, and reduces dry mouth.

Practice Dental Hygiene

The best way to reduce bacteria in your mouth is to take care of your dental hygiene. You need to be brushing your teeth at least twice a day. This removes leftover food, bacteria, and plaque from your teeth. Additionally, you should be flossing daily because this removes plaque and bacteria from between your teeth where your toothbrush can’t reach.

If you want to be more thorough, you can also use mouthwash which allows you to clean every surface of your mouth. If you wear a retainer, it can collect even more bacteria. Make sure you’re properly cleaning your retainer on a regular basis so you aren’t repeatedly introducing more bacteria to your teeth.

Visit the Dentist

There’s a lot you can do in your daily routine to keep your mouth clean. However, it isn’t always the most thorough. Going to the dentist regularly allows you to get a deep cleaning. Your dentist will remove any plaque that you aren’t able to clean away with brushing and flossing. During your visit, your dentist can also look for any warning spots that are areas of concern. They can monitor these in-between visits and recommend solutions if a problem worsens. Additionally, your dentist can give you tips on ways you can improve your dental hygiene.

Bad bacteria can cause a lot of problems in your mouth if you don’t address them. You need to make sure you have a thorough dental routine and create good habits that reduce bacteria in your mouth.
